Why monthly
Errors are easier to fix while bills and memories are fresh. GST and TDS returns are monthly or quarterly anyway, so a monthly close keeps them in line with the books.
After closing
Lock the period so no one posts back-dated entries by mistake. Any change after that should be a deliberate, logged correction.
